Should we or shouldn't we?

Jonathan and I are often asked if we are going to find out the McNugget's gender before it's born. We have a few more weeks until the next sonogram which can tell us if we want to know.

So far, we are undecided. Jonathan wants to find out and I don't. I understand Jonathan's position. It's not about picking colors for the nursery (we have decided we are going to do everything in a gender-neutral way anyway) but rather about visualizing what's ahead for us. He thinks, and I am tempted to agree, that if we know, we can better prepare ourselves for what to expect.

I'm still on the fence. I think it will be such a great surprise to wait and it will make the painful process a touch more exciting on the McNugget's big day.

So, what do you think? I've set up a poll where you can vote. I am not saying that we are going to go with the people's choice on this one but it would be nice to know where you all stand on the issue. Feel free to elaborate on your vote in the comments, we read them all.

I say yes. A favorite comedian of mine Gary Gulman (he was on the second season of Last Comic Standing and happens to be a 6 foot 6 Jew) did a funny skit about his sister wanting to be surprised.
I've scoured youtube to find it but can't. General premise is that there are only two choices and no one has ever flipped a coin and said "Wow, heads! I'm so suprised!"

In my VAST experience with pregnancy (*snort*) I would just think I'd like to know the gender so I could bond with the baby a little more. Does that make sense? I feel like it would get me more excited.

Just my two cents.

we're going on #3 and have never found out.

there's merit to either, of course, but tell Jonathan that the surprise at the moment of birth is, IMHO, one of the most intense/dramatic things I've EVER experienced. see my blog, www.jer979.com for a number of posts on this.

I thought you wanted to do it the old-fashioned way with a minimalist baby and all. Waiting to be surprised seems more in line with that ethos. That's why I vote NO on Proposition McNugget Gender.

as you know, we decided not to find out. i can't wait for that moment when they say "It's a XXXX" and agree with you that it will make the very stressful/painful day a little more exciting. Not that have a child isn't already exciting, but it adds another element of surprise. Something else to push for...

I say wait. It's one of life's last great surprises, why not enjoy it?
